Congrats to San Francisco Code-a-thon winners
Our first code-a-thon of 2011 kicked off with a bang this past weekend with over 160 attendees creating new and exciting health care applications! The Health 2.0 team was incredibly impressed with what was built on a (mostly) deserted Google campus in just eight short hours.
Early in the day, the group broke into 10 groups and set out for a day packed full of design, research and coding. While everything created went beyond our expectations (some teams even had their app running on a mobile platform!), there were three applications that really stood out to our judges. As a prize, those three teams will be traveling to the Health 2.0 Spring Fling to demo their project. Here is a brief rundown of what the winners created:

Advancing Children’s Health in California created a tool for school nurses to track asthma symptoms and events for students. In their application, each student has an online school health record that holds physician information, medications, notes and detailed information on asthma events, complete with graphs. The system allow nurses to send parents alerts from the system, and eventually the team hopes to make the entire program accessible to parents. In addition to a trip to the Health 2.0 Spring Fling, this team won a special $500 prize awarded by the Lucile Packard Foundation for utilizing datasets from kidsdata.org in their application. |
| FreeHealthcare developed a application that guides users to the free services that are available to them through their insurance plans. Through a short series of simple questions, including gender, age group and insurance information, the user can see what preventative care they are eligible to receive and shows them facilites in their area that offer the recommended services |

Wellness Garden created a mobile application that rewards winners with additions to their own virtual garden as they reach their health and wellness goals. |
Runners up
There were two other applications that were so great, they won Best Buy gift cards:
| Roving Screens developed Cube Quest, a mobile game that links completion of tasks to the health of an avatar. Throughout the day users are alerted multiple times to get moving with a specific task. Based on success in task completion, the user’s avatar becomes stronger or weaker. |

| Brain Mapping for Autism developed an application that aggregates PubMed data based on a user search and displays it on a map to easily find an expert in the user’s community. |
