Researchers from the University of Washington, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital created an app that lets patients test their lung function at home.The research app called SpiroSmart works with a smartphone to analyze sound wave frequencies to detect whether or not patients can breathe normally.

Cancer information resource provider Navigating Cancer raised $2.25 million led by Western Technology Investment. The company created an online portal that integrates with patients’ health records. Navigating Cancer plans to use the funding to expand its engineering team.

Medical research organization, The West Health Institute developed technology that uses Microsoft’s Kinect for physical therapy. The Reflexion Rehabilitation Measurement Tool allows medical professionals to remotely monitor patients and keep them on tack with their routines. Clinical trials of the system will begin at the Naval Medical Center of San Diego.

CommunicateHealth, Inc. will host a design hack-a-thon aimed at improving health information literacy. The event will take place Oct. 13-14 at The University of Massachusetts Amherst.
