Open Culture Features an Animated Version of “Man as Industrial Palace”

If Open Culture isn’t already a regular stop in your internet day, I hope this convinces you. Lead editor, Dan Colman,  Director & Associate Dean of Stanford’s Continuing Studies Program, explains the history behind this animated version of Fritz Kahn‘s 1926 Der Mensch als Industriepalast (Man as Industrial Palace) lithograph.

Der Mensch als Industriepalast [Man as Industrial Palace] from Henning Lederer on Vimeo.

Fritz Kahn was a German gynecologist and anatomy textbook author who depicted the human body as a factory. Using a man-machine analogy, he capture how industrialization had taken over western life in a way that’s not too different from health care’s current relationship with technology. This dynamic version by Henning Lederer is currently on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of the “Health for Sale” exhibition. Please go to Open Culture for more details.
