Announcing the Winner of the Consumer Apps Developer Challenge

Today, Health 2.0 and Health and Human Services announced the winner of the Challenge for Consumer Apps and to Visualize Care Quality Measures.

There were some truly great submissions and the judges had a tough time deciding who the winner should be. Ultimately, Team CGI Federal impressed the judges the most with their web and mobile based application, Healthcare Quality Compare.

Their winning application helps users easily find and compare healthcare facilities based on various quality measures. While teams were only required to use one of the Medicare datasets, CGI Federal used multiple facility comparisons. This allowed for their end product to let users search by facility type (hospital, nursing home, home care or dialysis facility), medical condition, or surgical procedure. Once a facility has been located, users can do a number of things with their search: they can opt to directly compare multiple facilities, view emergency room wait times, access contact information and driving directions. As if that wasn’t enough, facility searches can be filtered even further by rating.

The team has been awarded $2,500, an invite to meet with leaders at HHS to further discuss their application, and they’ll be presenting at the Health 2.0 Conference in San Diego, March 21-22, 2011.

Coming in second place was team Open Crowd who used Medicare datasets to create a mobile application that allows users to locate nearby hospitals and then compare and filter based on quality scores, satisfaction scores and mortality statistics. In addition to these rating features the hospitals are given an overall numerical score. The application includes one-touch navigation and easy access to contact information for listed facilities. Team Open Crowd was also invited to brief members of HHS about their project.

Congrats to both teams!
